Elliott Genther
The homeowner never liked the shiplap wrapping the fireplace. So it came down.
Before

In Progress
I demoed the shiplap and built it back with custom trim. I also recessed a cubby into the wall so the homeowner’s picture frame TV could sit low and tight to the wall, the way it’s meant to hang.
The trickiest part was scribing the trim around the mantle. It took patience, and it turned out great.

After
Above the mantle I laid out twelve picture-frame panels with mitered corners. The trim doesn’t stop at the face of the chimney. It wraps around both sides, and the horizontal lines carry onto the side walls, so the whole fireplace reads as one piece instead of a box on the wall.
Finished in Sherwin-Williams Pure White to match the rest of the trim in the house.
